Poll: Most Coloradans Agree on Climate Change

Grand Junction, CO - While the country may seem to be spending lots of time debating health care, a new Zogby poll finds most Americans to be united on the other hot topic - climate change legislation. The survey found 71 percent of voters nationwide support the American Clean Energy and Security Act, a climate change bill passed by the House this summer.

David Dittloff, regional organizer for the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) in Colorado says voters in the western states are no exception.

"They support the bill from an environmental standpoint; they get that this is a real critical issue and needs to be addressed. But, they see this as an economic driver as well."

Research has shown that Colorado would get a bigger payoff by investing in renewable energy, says Dittloff.

"Clean energy investments create three times more jobs than fossil fuel-related investments."

The poll shows climate change legislation is overwhelming favored by Democrats and independents, as well as nearly half of Republicans. The proposal has broad appeal because it uses market forces rather than traditional top-down government regulation, Dittloff adds.

"It taps into the American entrepreneurial spirit. It's not old school, command and control environmental regulation."

According to the survey, two-thirds of the likely voters thought climate change legislation would not lead to job loss, and a majority believed it would be helpful in creating jobs. Opponents of the bill say it would hurt the economy, and the costs of implementing it would be passed on to consumers. The Senate is expected to take up climate change when lawmakers return in the fall.
