Albuquerque - Some New Mexico lawmakers and leaders are gathering in Albuquerque for a teach-in for a cooler future. Local chapters of the League of Women Voters and Sierra Club are holding a symposium on the UNM campus today to talk about seizing opportunities to fight climate change.

Ken Hughes, conservation chair of the Rio Grande Sierra Club, says one of the goals will be to put the total costs of climate change action or inaction into an economic perspective, and look for solutions that help the environment while turning around the economy.

"Look at how we can create jobs, green collar jobs, through plugging the holes; greatly reducing the pollution that causes climate change."

Edward Mazria, executive director of Architecture 2030, will be giving the day's keynote address. He says, right now, the slumping housing and construction sectors present a great opportunity to rebuild both an economy and buildings that are greener.

"As we bring back the building sector in this country, as the economy gets better, we want to bring it back in a way that's more efficient. So, we will lay out a program on how to do that."

The plan includes a variety of incentives to encourage public investment in more efficient construction. The Senate is expected to consider the climate change bill this fall. The House passed a bill earlier this summer.

Friday's panels will feature experts on green building and renovation, creating walkable communities, the impacts of climate change on water resources and other topics. Reps. Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Lujan will also be in attendance and there will be a response from Sens. Bingaman and Udall. The event runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at UNM's George Pearl Hall. The event schedule is at www.lwvnm.org/Events/ClimateChangeNM.html#program.
