DC Insider Talks Health Care with Coloradans

DENVER - Coloradans will get to peek behind the curtain of Capitol Hill Tuesday for an insider's look at what's going on in the minds of decision makers in the health care debate. AARP will be hosting veteran political analyst and publisher of the Cook Political Report, Charlie Cook, for a talk on the hottest political topic of the summer.

Cook says to expect some sort of health care reform signed into law, but don't expect the President to get everything he hoped for.

"Probably we'll get more reform than we've seen in a very long time, and a lot less than what he and most Democrats wanted."

Cook says Colorado's lawmakers are right in the middle of the debate, including Senator Michael Bennet, who is preparing for his first big election campaign.

"You know, here's somebody that clearly would like to be supportive, but he's got to be careful. I mean, he's never won an election before."

Bennet was appointed to his seat last winter to succeed Ken Salazar, who was named Secretary of the Interior by President Obama.

Cook says an underlying issue is the public's anxiety that people could lose the quality of coverage they have today, and he says most of that worry comes from escalating costs.

"We really do need to rein in costs in some fair way, and I think that's sort of the part of the debate that's not really taking place."

Cook says vocal opponents at recent town hall meetings have been a big surprise for some Democrats.

"It's like a bucket of ice water over the heads of the Democratic party left, that the whole country really doesn't see this the way they see things."

Cook will be speaking at the LoDo Tattered Cover in Denver from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Admission is free, but seating is limited.
