Women's Equality Day: Marking a Milestone

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio is joining states across the country in observing a major milestone. Today is "Women's Equality Day," marking the passage of the 19th Amendment 89 years ago, giving women full voting rights. President of the League of Women Voters of Ohio, Meg Flack, says it's an important day, which opened up the voting booth to more than half the population of the United States.

"It's a defining moment in American history - a time when we can all celebrate the power of democracy and the power of an informed electorate."

The day was designated by Congress in 1971 to recognize both the anniversary of suffrage and of women's continued efforts toward equal rights in the United States. Ohio was the sixth state to ratify the 19th Amendment; Mississippi was the last, in 1984.

In Flack's opinion, the fight by women to obtain the right to vote illustrates that, as Abraham Lincoln once put it, the nation is a democracy "of the people, by the people and for the people."

"The lesson for all of us is that, as citizens in a democracy, we do have the power and the opportunity and the privilege to participate in making that democracy work. And, if we don't participate, our voices will not be heard."

Flack points out that the League of Women Voters was founded the same year the 19th Amendment passed and continues work to ensure all Ohioans who are eligible to vote can do so, and have their votes counted.
