Back-to-School Tough for Kids and Parents

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Children across Missouri are back at school, but it can be hard on both kids and parents to be separated for the first time. Isabelle Fox, a developmental psychologist and an expert on separation anxiety, says the extended weekend of Labor Day gives them more time to analyze their new environment at school. And some children may not show signs of separation anxiety right away, she warns, so parents need to be prepared for it a few weeks down the road.

"Children may make the first adjustment pretty easily. But in six weeks, they suddenly have a negative experience at school and may then decide, 'I don't want to go to school anymore.'"

Even college-bound children may experience the same feelings, Fox adds, because they are living away from home for the first time.

Fox offers a suggestion for something parents can do that might help their kids be more at ease in class.

"It's important for the child to know where their own parent will be when they are at school. They need to sort of have structure in their mind of what they are leaving."

Fox says children are not the only ones showing some anxiety to this change in their life. Parents, too, may have trouble adjusting, she says, because they have less supervision over their children than they are used to.
