TN Citizen Action: Investigate National Healthcare Corporation

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - It took authorities weeks of investigation, but finally James Wright, a nurse's aide at a Virginia nursing home operated by Murfreesboro-based National Healthcare Corporation (NHC), is in jail facing charges of sexually assaulting female patients at the facility over a seven-year period. An attorney representing two of the victims alleged the company failed to act after evidence of the crimes was brought to their attention.

Tom Peters, executive director of Tennessee Citizen Action, now wants an investigation of actions by people up the chain of command.

"The district attorney, the Tennessee Department of Health, the Tennessee Department of Human Services, need to look at what happened in the chain of command, or in the polices of NHC, and find out what exactly happened there."

Peters says that, in the light of Wright's arrest and accusations about how the patient abuse went on so long, he's concerned about patients at other facilities the company owns.

"If a facility is willing to cover up something like this, you have to wonder what others things, maybe not as severe but just as important to the well-being of their patients, what other things are they covering up?"

There has been no comment from the company about the case. NHC also ran the Nashville nursing home where 16 residents died in a fire in 2003.
