LANSING, Mich. - Ask and you shall receive. That's exactly what advocates for Michigan children facing mental health challenges are hoping. The Association for Children's Mental Health (ACMH) is hoping to find 10 people between 16 and 25 years old to become the membership of a statewide Youth Advisory Council.

Jessica West, the group's youth coordinator, says the council will encourage and motivate young people to organize and help fight the stigma often associated with mental health conditions.

"The Council is being put together so that we can find out what those youth issues are, and then address them throughout the state."

West says the Council will serve a very valuable function as the nation and state grapple with budgetary and program issues.

"The youth know best. They know what works for them and what doesn't work for them. And if we're not listening to them, then the services that are being provided for them are not really helping them."

Once established, the Council will focus on creating a policy agenda and recommendations for involving youth. The deadline for applications is October 5, and members of the council will be expected to serve two-year terms.
