HARRISBURG, Penn. - Across Pennsylvania Tuesday, demonstrators will rally against what they say are insurance companies' efforts to beat back health care reform. The rallies, from one end of the state to the other, share a common slogan: "Big Insurance: Sick of It." They come on the heels of a report from Families USA showing that between 2000 and 2009, the cost of health care premiums for Pennsylvanians rose nearly five and a half times faster than their median earnings.

Families USA executive director Ron Pollack says that figure is snapshot of the situation across the country.

"Health insurance premiums for family coverage rose by 93 percent on average, nationwide. Median earnings rose by only 19 percent."

In addition to paying higher premiums, Pollack adds, policy-holders have been getting less for their money.

"These increasing premium costs are purchasing thinner coverage: Policies have higher deductibles, higher co-payments and cover less."

Families USA favors health care reform, including some kind of robust public option. The demonstrators turning out Tuesday say insurance companies have been spending millions of dollars lobbying to defeat health care reform legislation that includes a public health insurance option.

The Families USA study is available at www.familiesusa.org. Information about Families USA is available by calling 202-628-3030.

Information about more than 100 "Big Insurance: Sick of it" rally locations nationwide may be found at www.pol.moveon.org.
