Thousands Expected for "Teach In" Rally at the Capitol

SANTA FE, NM - Schools may be off today in some parts of New Mexico, but parents, teachers and students plan a "teach-in" at the Roundhouse in Santa Fe. They hope to educate lawmakers at this afternoon's rally about the impacts potential budget cuts being discussed around the Capitol could have on classrooms and local communities.

Christine Trujillo, president of the American Federation of Teachers, the nation's second-largest education labor union, says they're expecting more than 3,000 people to descend on the Capitol.

"We're asking folks to wear blue, come with pots and pans or drums, because Senate leadership is saying that they haven't heard the steady drumbeat of concern. Well, if tomorrow doesn't show 'em that steady drumbeat of concern, then they must have their heads in the sand."

Trujillo says further cuts could mean eliminating sports and extracurricular activities, and the effects would be felt in the classroom, too.

"We'll have to increase class sizes, lay off or furlough any staff that they deem unessential staff."

Demonstrators say that could include nurses, counselors or special education teachers, among others.

Lawmakers are considering across-the-board cuts to education as deep as 10 percent, saying it's a necessary and fair way to address the state's budget crisis. Educators say their programs already have been cut to the bone, and further cuts would be disastrous. They suggest raising revenue by rolling back previous tax cuts for high-income New Mexicans as a better way to balance the budget.

Some schools have canceled class for the day due to the large number of teachers and students taking the day off to attend the rally, which begins at the Rail Runner Station on Guadalupe at noon, followed by a march to the Roundhouse starting at 12:30.
