CHICAGO - There's no denying it - the state of Illinois is in turmoil. With a projected budget shortfall of $12.8 billion and a highly contentious gubernatorial race kicking off with a slew of negative campaign ads, Illinoisans have a lot of questions about the future. Tuesday, they will have a chance to pose those questions to Illinois Rep. Greg Harris.

Kathy Ryg, president of Voices for Illinois Children, coordinated and will moderate the call.

"What we want and need to accomplish is to give people the information they need to hold elected officials accountable for finding the balanced solution. Then, when they speak to candidates, they will have enough information to get them to talk about solutions, not about blame."

Last year, money problems resulted in massive state budget cuts, to the tune of $1 billion. Those cuts affected important programs that benefit children and families, Ryg says. Tuesday's call is necessary, she explains, because it will address concerns about this year's budget and the potential for additional cuts during an especially hard time for Illinois families.

"The budget is certainly a major concern to many citizens of Illinois, and we feel like its time to report back to people what the current state of the state is and then look forward to the budget process for the next fiscal year."

Anyone wishing to join Tuesday morning's 10:30 a.m. conference call with Rep. Harris may RSVP by calling 312-516-5573 or e-mailing Sheena Panoor, spanoor@voices4kids.org.
