AKRON, Ohio - Two years ago, he stood alongside the Iraqi army as an American solider. Today, United States Marine veteran Glenn Kunkel, Akron, has a different mission. He's part of the Operation Free delegation in Copenhagen, Denmark, for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15).

Kunkle says he has seen first-hand the security threat posed by climate change. He warns that climate change must be addressed in order to protect the U.S. and its allies from having to fight future conflicts.

"It would be irresponsible of us to negate or deny this threat to future members of the American armed forces, let alone to the people who will have to go through such turmoil."

Kunkle says the droughts, famines and floods caused by climate change can destabilize countries, leading to government collapse and producing safe havens for terrorists.

The world needs a united front on climate change with the United States taking the lead, Kunkle asserts.

"This is a global thing. It is not uniquely American, but we as Americans have to do the right thing and step up to the plate as we've always done in the past to combat this threat to our global security."

Leaders from almost 200 nations are attending COP15, including President Obama. The conference continues through Dec. 18. More information about COP15 is available at http://en.cop15.dk/.
