Crunch Time for Health Care Debate - ND Businesses Keep Close Watch

BISMARCK, N. D. - It's "crunch time" in Washington, D.C., as Congress gets down to the debate about which items should - or should not - be included in a health care reform bill. Here in North Dakota, one small business owner says now is the time to listen, perhaps more closely than ever, to the debate.

Nancy Guy of Bismarck believes thousands of small businesses like hers could benefit from reform. She's concerned about corporate-backed ads running nationwide, that make it appear North Dakota small business owners would be hurt by the legislation.

"If you have less than a hundred employees, you can join or use the health insurance exchange so that you can get group rates and have a greater choice of insurers. There are actually 21,000 small businesses in North Dakota that would be eligible for that."

She acknowledges some people may be experiencing the symptoms of "health care reform fatigue" from the months of heated arguments about the issue. However, she says, this is no time to let lawmakers write the legislation without hearing from citizens.

"As they're going through these negotiations, talking about what's important for their state and their constituents, they don't know unless we tell them."

Opponents to the current health care reform proposals cite their potential costs to small business. Guy counters that, under the plan approved by the U.S. House, 19,000 of North Dakota's smallest businesses could qualify for tax credits that would offset much of their insurance cost.
