New MN Network Helps Farmers Through Tough Times

ST. PAUL, Minn. - As many Minnesota farmers hunker down for survival during what amounts to a financial crisis, a new assistance program has opened to provide advice and support. The Minnesota Farmers Assistance Network (MFAN), announced by Gov. Pawlenty in August, has launched and is providing mentoring, technical assistance and financial guidance to farm families struggling with financial hardships.

Peter Scheffert, division director for the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, says the program's goal is to put farm families onto the road to economic recovery.

"This is one more tool they have in their toolbox. If they're looking for help on specific issues, particularly in the financial and business area, we can work with them and help look at what the options are so they can be successful and continue to feed the world."

Livestock farmers have been hit with a double challenge of high energy and feed costs, while prices for meat and milk have plummeted below break-even levels, says Scheffert. In addition, grain prices are down. About eight percent of farmers who participate in the Farm Business Management Education program have been forced to shut down, and 40 percent say they will lose money this year.

The Network uses volunteers to provide referrals for specific services, which include legal advice and mental health counseling. Scheffert expects many requests for mental health help.

"When people are under stress and families are under stress, funny things happen. The Network allows people and farmers, particularly, to call in and talk to somebody who understands the issues they're going through, and get help with that mental health side of it."

MFAM is administered by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture's Rural Finance Authority. Farmers seeking assistance can call 877-898-MFAN [6326] or visit online www.mda.state.mn.us/mfan.
