Should Illinois Catholic Politicians Fear Denial of Communion?

CHICAGO - The debate surrounding abortion and the heath care reform bill has wedged its way into Illinois politics. U.S. Senate hopeful Andy Martin, a member of the Episcopal church, is calling on Cardinal Francis George to ban Sen. Dick Durbin from receiving Communion.

Durbin supports a bill that, in Martin's opinion, does not do enough to prevent federal funds from being spent on abortion. But Robert Gilligan, executive director of the Catholic Conference of Illinois, believes there is only a slim chance that Martin's request would be granted.

"I don't think – in Illinois, at least – you're going to see any of the bishops make public declarations that certain individuals should or should not receive Communion. It's best left to the individual conscience of each individual person."

The Catholic church's request for tighter restrictions on the use of federal funds for abortions has created tension between the church and some pro-choice Catholic politicians who favor a public health care plan. Even so, says Gilligan, any calls for denying the rite of Communion are unwarranted, regardless of views that may have been shared by a parishioner with his or her priest.

"I don't know this for a fact, but I would be willing to bet that some conversations like that probably happen here in Illinois. Bishops and priests have private conversations with many parishioners - and I think those conversations are best left to be private, because they're between an individual and their priest."

Neither Cardinal George nor Senator Durbin has commented on Martin's request.
