Salió a Haití el equipo de auxilio por el sismo

SEATTLE - El grupo internacional de auxilio Mercy Corps envió a Haití un equipo de salvamento especialista en desastres, luego de que ese país fue devastado el martes pasado por el mayor sismo jamás registrado en el área, con una intensidad de 7 grados en la escala de Richter.

El equipo enviado está integrado por expertos en emergencias, y su misión consiste en evaluar las necesidades y coordinar los esfuerzos para rescatar a las víctimas del devastado país isleño del Caribe. Esta agencia internacional de auxilio tiene ya larga experiencia en terremotos, adquirida durante sus operaciones en China y Perú. Caitlin Carlson, ejecutiva de comunicaciones de Mercy Corps, explica que las necesidades más imperativas son comida, agua limpia, servicios sanitarios y albergues.

"La gente tiene miedo de regresar a sus casas. No saben si habrá réplicas del sismo que también les vulneren, así que los albergues son una de las mayores necesidades."

Carlson manifiesta que Mercy Corps espera que el gobierno haitiano permita la entrada a su equipo de respuesta emergente para ayudar con sus esfuerzos al auxilio de las víctimas. Carlson añade que los especialistas en rescate, para viajar a Haití, llevaron muy pocos suministros, con el fin de comprar localmente lo más posible.

"Después de un desastre, las economías se apagan – así que gastar un poco de dinero para comprar esos suministros no sólo ayuda a que la gente cuente con ellos, sino que además ayuda a las personas que los venden."
