PIERRE, S.D. - Up to 200 members of AARP-South Dakota are expected in Pierre Tuesday to talk to legislators about issues affecting seniors. Associate state director Sam Wilson says they're carefully watching the budget process, which could lead to cuts in critical programs.

"We really have our eye on programs, such as Medicaid, that help particularly low-income elderly folks, help take care of their long term care needs. There are some special tax credit programs, like the elderly and disabled tax credit program, that provide low-income elderly and disabled folks a small refund on their sales or property tax."

He says legislators will also be looking to expand the state's anti-discrimination laws, which he hopes will include age discrimination.

"Just by looking at our work force in the state of South Dakota, there are more and more folks either returning to work after retirement, or working later on into their years. We know that there are difficulties in the workplace for older workers, and we certainly don't want there to be any type of obstruction for them."

In addition to state issues, Wilson says, AARP is also keeping an eye on the health-care reform debate going on in Washington.

Wilson says they're very concerned about cuts in the Medicaid program that could affect long-term care.

"We know that roughly 58 percent of the folks that our in our nursing homes are on Medicaid; that's what pays for their long-term-care stays. And any disruption in that care really could have catastrophic effects."
