Tens of Thousands of OH Jobless Could Lose Final Lifeline

COLUMBUS, Ohio - If Congress doesn't act quickly, tens of thousands of Ohioans will lose the assistance that has helped them stay afloat during the economic meltdown. According to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, more than 24,000 Ohioans will begin exhausting their jobless benefits in just two weeks; by June, about 200,000 will lose federal compensation.

At the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks, executive director Lisa Hamler-Fugitt says the money helps support basic human needs.

"This is the final lifeline for many who have lost their jobs during this deepening recession. It's keeping a roof over their heads and in some cases, food on their tables, utilities, basic medications. This is it."

An extension of benefits has been discussed in Washington, D.C., but many are concerned there isn't enough time to act on it, since a snowstorm shut down the Capitol last week and Congress is in recess this week.

Hamler-Fugitt sees this as a federal issue because she says the coffers are bare at the state level.

"Ohio's unemployment compensation trust fund is bankrupt. We have, as a state, been borrowing from the federal government, and we will require a federal response."

A number of unemployment extensions already have been made, but Hamler-Fugitt hopes federal leaders recognize the severity of the situation and act as quickly as possible on another extension. Ohio's unemployment rate is 10.9 percent, compared to the national rate of 9.7 percent.
