LANSING, Mich. - President Obama says job creation is the new theme of his administration, and in the recent State of the State address, Gov. Granholm set it as a key goal for Michigan this year, too. Jobs seem to be on everyone's mind these days, but more experienced women in the Michigan labor pool have been particularly hard-hit by the sour economy. The AARP Foundation in Michigan is looking to remedy that by providing scholarships to women over 40 who are seeking new job skills, training and educational opportunities to support themselves and their families.

Program spokesperson Jacqueline Morrison says losing a job later in life is very difficult.

"In fact, those who are 55 and over stay unemployed almost three times as long as others who are unemployed."

Morrison says the AARP scholarships are available to those with moderate to lower incomes and limited financial resources. Scholarships may be used for any course of study at a public or private secondary school.

Morrison says it's easy to apply.

"The scholarship is open to women age 40 and over. You don't have to be an AARP member, but you do have to demonstrate your financial need."

Morrison says employers should note that many older folks are staying on the job longer to make up ground lost during the economic downturn.

"If you get back in the workplace and you're 45 or 50, you intend to stay there for a while."

The application process closes on March 31, and scholarships will be awarded in early summer. Full details are available at www.AARPFoundationWLC.org.
