WI Companies Find the Green in Promoting Clean Energy

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - A Wisconsin florist is joining 2,500 other companies from around the nation in supporting Congressional action on clean energy and climate legislation. The American Businesses for Clean Energy (ABCE) coalition, which includes Gap and Warner Music Group is an initiative to demonstrate large and small businesses support federal clean energy and climate legislation for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Deb Karpfinger, owner of The Flower Lady in Wauwatosa, says she employs composting and recycling to improve profits.

"We produce tons and tons of green materials, like hundreds and hundreds of roses for large events, and we cut the stems off."

Rather than sending those stems to the landfill, they are composted, says Karpfinger, who says they also save money by reusing vases and the boxes they come in.

In her floral business, Karpfinger says she has figured out ways to help the environment and her budget at the same time.

"If we pack a big event, many vases and big boxes, we reuse the boxes, we reuse all the packing materials. That helps our bottom line because we never have to buy packing materials."

Growing flowers depends on a healthy environment, she adds, and her business and others are dedicated to legislation promoting that.

The ABCE coalition promotes clean energy legislation for job creation, revitalizing the economy, and improving air quality. Proposed federal climate legislation is stalled as lawmakers debate the costs that limiting carbon pollution could add to energy used by companies and consumers.
