MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - A new statewide Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) poll finds 49 percent of Tennesseans say President Obama could do more to cooperate with Republicans in Congress on health care reform. But, MTSU poll director Dr. Ken Blake says, when asked about specific provisions of the proposed bill, such as insurance coverage for people with pre-existing conditions and subsidies for poor people who need help buying insurance, many voters said they liked the bill.

"National polling shows that most Americans actually kind of like most of the things that are in the current bill."

President Obama is still unpopular with Tennesseans as his job-approval rating dips to 42 percent. Earlier this year he was perceived as reaching out to congressional Republicans, but that's changed, adds Blake.

"In these results, Tennesseans really think both Obama and congressional Republicans need to do more to work together.
"
The telephone poll was conducted by students in the College of Mass Communication. Students interviewed 634 people, aged 18 or older, who were chosen at random from the state population. The poll has an estimated error margin of plus-or-minus four percentage points.

The report is available at www.mtsusurveygroup.org.
