MINNEAPOLIS - She lost a father at three, was thrust into poverty, then diagnosed with juvenile arthritis and is now the caretaker of her mother, who is dying of cancer. Amanda Kelley is a senior in high school, but she hasn't let the blows in life get her down. Instead, she is being honored by the Children's Defense Fund as a "Beat the Odds" winner, which includes a $4,000 scholarship.

Kelley says the key is to set high standards.

"People need to do anything they can do to actually reach those standards. I know that if they do set high enough standards and if they actually reach those standards, they will feel extremely proud of themselves."

Next fall, Kelley will go to St. Catherine University, where she plans on majoring in pre-law and psychology.

Jim Koppel, Minnesota director of Children's Defense Fund, says people like Kelley keep his organization determined to change the odds and create a level playing field for all Minnesota kids striving to reach successful adulthood - despite ill-health, poverty, homelessness, abuse and even chemical addictions.

Koppel says it's important to point out the positive when we hear about today's youth committing crimes. To stop this cycle, families need to work together, he says, and government needs to keep kids out of poverty.

"We need liveable-wage jobs; we need health care guaranteed for every child in this country; we need to have quality child care that's going to get them prepared for kindergarten."

Kelley and three other honorees will receive $4,000 scholarships on March 12, and 10 others will receive $500 scholarships. "Beat the Odds" events also will take place in Rochester and St. Cloud, and in 12 other cities across the country.
