NY Environmentalists Use New Media & Old To Fight Budget Cuts

NEW YORK - It seems New Yorkers are getting the message everywhere they look – on electronic billboards on the Thruway as they drive to work; on the radio, TV, and in print and new media advertisements. Conservation groups are making it clear: They believe drastic cuts to the state's environmental budget don't make sense.

Dick Amper, executive director of the Long Island Pine Barrens Society, says his group is one of more than a dozen backing the ad blitz to make the case that the state cannot afford Gov. David Paterson's proposed $69 million cut to the state's Environmental Protection Fund.

"The environment matters to everyone. It has been cut in good years and it can't afford to be cut in bad years. And, since it only represents one-tenth of one percent of the state budget, cutting it is not going to help the deficit one bit."

The cuts don't make sense in terms of economics either, according to Bill Ulfelder, New York state director for The Nature Conservancy. His group has studied the value of open spaces and parks; he says they make a major return on every tax dollar invested.

"Every dollar spent on open space, wildlife habitat, conservation comes back in a tenfold benefit – things like revenue generated from tourism, outdoor recreation."

Amper adds the organizations are committed to keeping their "We Love New York" message at the forefront during the budget process. They also have a Web site,www.keepprotectingny.org.

"We're going to run billboards; we're going to run personal ads. We're going to be in print, radio and television. We're going to be in every medium until we get this fixed."

Paterson has defended his cuts, saying the state has been avoiding making tough choices for decades. Amper points out that most state agency budgets are being reduced from five to ten percent, which makes the proposed 33 percent cut to the Environmental Protection Fund seem out of line in comparison.
