Paid Sick Days in NH: Good for Employees and Business?

CONCORD, N.H. - When people are sick with the flu, most doctors advise them to stay home to get better faster and to prevent the spread of illness to others, but that might be easier said than done. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 200,000 New Hampshire workers in the private sector don't get paid sick days.

Nikki Murphy with the New Hampshire Women's Alliance (NHWA) in Concord would like to see that change. Her organization sees paid sick days for full-time workers as a basic standard that would help not only workers and families, but also businesses. She cites a recent New Hampshire cost analysis that found businesses would actually save money by implementing the benefit.

"The benefits for employers would total $76 million annually, largely from reduced costs of turn-over. So, if you look at what happens when you have a paid sick day policy in a business, really what you see is workers who are able to be retained by the business because they feel cared for when they have this basic benefit."

State Representative Mary Stuart Gile is the prime sponsor of a bill mandating that employers with more than 10 employees offer up to five paid sick days per year. The bill is the result of a task force on work and family. Gile says the group's focus is two-fold; to make sure that New Hampshire families do well and that businesses thrive. She says that if the state wants to retain younger workers, businesses will need to update their practices.

"If you want to hire and attract the best, the most creative and the most talented workers, then in this 21st century, you have to think about policies that provide paid sick leave, paid family leave."

Many business groups in New Hampshire are against any bills that would mandate paid sick days for employees, citing concerns about high costs to employers, especially during difficult economic times.
