Group: Legislature May Mean All Pain, No Gain for Fl. Families

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Hundreds of union members from across Florida are meeting with their legislators this week to discuss a session they fear is more about corporate tax breaks than caring for Florida families.

The Florida AFL-CIO claims bills now being considered by state lawmakers could total more than $1 billion in corporate bailouts over the next three years, while working families continue to face pink slips and pay cuts. Mike Williams, AFL-CIO state president, says the proposed tax breaks for corporations could mean additional cuts in funding for critical services.

"It's all pain and no gain. Corporations and the wealthiest of Florida are gaining great benefits and the pain continues and has expanded on working families."

Others are convinced that giving companies tax breaks will spur more job creation and stimulate the struggling Florida economy, although Williams disagrees. In his view, that philosophy has led to record unemployment, and additional proposals that would limit worker's rights, unemployment compensation and teacher pay.

"Show me those jobs. Highest unemployment on record in the state of Florida. This same philosophy of tax giveaways to corporations, if it's been working, show me the jobs."

As Florida workers face record high unemployment, he adds, there are also proposed cutbacks in programs to assist the unemployed. He feels lawmakers are turning their backs on revenue opportunities, such as taxing skyboxes and yacht sales, that could fund these programs.

"We'd like to see the state of Florida stop the bleeding in our tax structure and come to conclusions about how to handle the economic crisis we have today."

Williams says the proposed cuts in public safety, health and education could have long-term impacts on Floridians. Instead, he says he favors a balance that is fair to both companies and workers.
