Clean Energy Mission Targets Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Buckeye State is this week's destination for a clean energy mission traveling the country in a bio-Diesel-fueled bus. The goal of the "Veterans for American Power" bus tour is to build better public understanding of the national security implications of climate change.

During her deployment to Iraq in 2003, Robin Eckstein drove missions hauling fuel and water. Back then, she says, she was a slow-moving target. She says part of the U.S. military's logistical nightmare is due to its dependence on foreign oil.

"Every time when we rolled outside the gates of Baghdad International Airport, it was a roll of the dice, as far as if we were even going to live or die, in order to get this fuel to these outposts that could not function without it. "

Eckstein says veterans are delivering the clean energy message to put a face on the lack of a national energy policy. And if things don't change, she says, soldiers will suffer the consequences.

"You're going to continue to see marines, soldiers, sailors die trying to protect our oil interests and to get the fuel to these various outposts in this war, when we could have solar generators instead."

Eckstein adds that the U.S. spends billions of dollars overseas to import oil, while she thinks that money could be better spent at home, stimulating the economy.

"Clean energy is going to be the wave of the future. So, we should be putting money into that, so we can be a world leader again and have the jobs here in the United States which we so desperately need."

Eckstein says the military recognizes the threat and is working to move away from fossil fuels. She and other veterans on the tour want to build support for comprehensive energy and climate legislation in Congress.

The tour stops for rallies in Akron today, and Cincinnati Tuesday.
