Volunteers Make Tax Time Less Taxing For CA Seniors

March 29, 2010

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The tax deadline is fast approaching and many senior and low-income Californians could use some free help. Volunteers with AARP's Tax-Aide program are helping tens of thousands of Californians at nearly 500 designated sites across the state. In it's 42nd year, the program is the nation's largest free volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance program.

Christina Clem, associate state director of communications for AARP California, says nearly 200,000 taxpayers took advantage of the service last year.

"You don't have to be an AARP member to use the services. It's targeted for low and moderate-income taxpayers and then we also do give special attention to people who are age 60 and older."

One of the best parts is the service is free, adds Clem, which can save taxpayers more than $100 in some cases.

"At a time when everybody is looking to cut back, we have this economic crisis that people are still pulling themselves out of, this is one way you can reduce one of those expenses."

Many locations offer electronic filing that allows taxpayers to receive their refunds much faster, while some of the sites are staffed with bilingual volunteers. Locations are listed at www.aarp.org/money/taxaide.
