MN Farm Groups Join the Call to Delist the Gray Wolf

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The clock is ticking on a request from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to remove the gray wolf from protection under the federal Endangered and Threatened Species Act. The DNR requested a response within 90 days when it filed the petition with the U.S. Department of Interior last month, and now several farm and livestock groups are making their voices heard in pushing for prompt federal action.

Minnesota Farmers Union president Doug Peterson explains why the groups support immediate delisting of the wolf in Minnesota.

"Livestock losses caused by wolves are on the rise, and according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Minnesota's gray wolf population is stable and healthy."

About 3,000 wolves make Minnesota home as of this year. Since 1998, producers who have lost livestock to wolves have filed more than 1,000 claims, and Minnesota taxpayers have spent nearly $1 million to compensate them for the losses. The Minnesota Farm Bureau, Minnesota Cattlemen's Association, Minnesota Lamb and Wool Producers and the state Department of Agriculture also support the delisting request.

The United States Humane Society and other animal protection groups disagree with the state's request. Leaders from those organizations say it is important not to rush such a decision. They want more scrutiny in order to be sure the population in the region is solid, not just populations within state boundaries.

Peterson says that wolves have already been successful - and in some areas, maybe too successful.

"Delisting the gray wolf would provide farmers who suffer from wolf depredation more options for protecting their livestock and pets."

Only Alaska's gray wolf population is larger than Minnesota's.
