DES MOINES, Iowa - The recession put a lot of Iowans out of work, but they may not have to stay unemployed. If they have an idea to provide a product or service, now is the ideal time to make it happen, according to Vada Grantham, chairperson of the Entrepreneurship Program at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC).

However, he cautions, you need more than just a good idea.

"They have to be funded initially; you see a lot of small businesses not fully funded to even get started... So funding is necessary; also the concept that they know their product."

He says DMACC will host the Sixth Annual Entrepreneurship Day on April 27. It's a free event and open to anyone who wants to learn the dos and don'ts of becoming an entrepreneur. Grantham says even in down economic times you can be successful.

"When the economy is down, that's when we see a lot of growth in the small business market. People are trying to take control of their lives, they see a lot downsizing and right-sizing and layoffs and of course the jobs being shipped to other locations."

The event will be from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, April 27, in the Building 6 Auditorium on the DMACC Ankeny Campus.
