Mes de concientización del Autismo en NM: Se necesitan recursos para familias y escuelas

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Abril es el mes de concientización del Autismo en Nuevo México y el país, y con la prevalencia del autismo ahora en uno de cada 110 niños (según cifras de la CDC, incremento a la cifra anterior de 1 en 150), tanto los padres como las escuelas a veces parecen abrumadas con el tener que incrementar su apoyo en tratar con la enfermedad.

Martha Benavidez es madre de un hijo con autismo y es maestra del kínder en Las Cruces. Dice que el diagnosticar la enfermedad a una edad temprana es esencial para obtener el tratamiento adecuado y espera que más padres y maestros continúen aprendiendo sobre los síntomas del autismo.

"Si tienes la impresion de que algo anda mal, confia en tu instinto porque los sintomas no son tan obvios como la gente cree."

Varias veces los primeros síntomas del autismo en un menor tienen que ver con dificultades por hablar o el no hablar para nada. Benavidez añade que es común que los pediatras comenten a los padres que se esperen porque todos los niños se desarrollan diferente; pero ella dice que si sientes que algo te preocupa, nada se pierde al pedir una evaluación profesional del autismo.

Señala Benavidez que el incremento en la prevalencia de la enfermedad ha causado que se incremente la demanda por profesionales en idioma y lingüística.

"Nos hace falta mucho mas expertos en linguistica e idioma, especialmente si son bilingues; no tenemos suficientes, y en Nuevo Mexico se tiene a muchos ninos bilingues y con autismo que no estan recibiendo la atencion que necesitan."

Dice Benavidez que también le gustaría ver que se formaran más grupos de apoyo en los distritos escolares del estado para padres de estudiantes con autismo.
