Connecticut Leading New England in STDs

HARTFORD, Conn. - Texting is all the rage among young people...and so are STDs (sexually transmitted diseases). The Connecticut Department of Public Health, along with MTV and several nonprofits, is hoping a GYT campaign takes off in cyberspace.

GYT stands for "Get Yourself Tested" - and "Get Yourself Talking" - about STDs. Connecticut has a much higher rate of sexually transmitted disease than any other New England state: Half of sexually active Nutmeggers contract an STD by age 25. Most of those who are infected show no symptoms, but Heidi Jenkins of the Connecticut Department of Public Health says if they are not treated, the consequences can be serious.

"The complications that can happen from this, for women in particular, are that the infection travels into the reproductive organs, and a woman could become sterile from either gonorrhea or Chlamydia."

Jenkins, the director of the state's Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Tuberculosis Control Program, says gonorrhea, syphilis and Chlamydia account for 15,000 new infections in the state every year. Anyone with an STD can pass the infection on to their partners, she warns. Free, confidential testing and treatments are available at many sites around the state.

Gov. Jodi Rell has declared today "STD Testing Day" in Connecticut, although Jenkins notes that the GYT program is ongoing.

"We're trying to make that program something on all the time. People need to be aware of exposure to STDs, of the risks of STDs, to be educated about STDs and to feel comfortable enough to go in and get tested."

A list of clinics offering free STD testing is available at the Connecticut Department of Public Health website, www.ct.gov.
