Last-Minute Mother's Day Gift Idea: Help a Woman in Need

NEW YORK - If you're stuck without a Mother's Day gift, it's not too late to get a pair of earrings that will make Mom feel good as well as look good. Mercy Corps sells Mercy Kits on its website. If you buy the $25 Women's Leadership Kit, you can send a gift card showing how your donation will help empower a woman or girl in an impoverished nation. Plus, the group's Heather Mangrum says, your Mom gets a nifty pair of earrings.

"They're really beautiful, gold color, and will go to her along with your Mercy Kit. They're not only very stylish, but they also preserve the memory of what the gift represents."

The fair-trade earrings are made in Kenya by a sister organization of Mercy Corps, she says.

If Mom is the kind of person who would appreciate you doing something for a woman or a girl in Asia, Africa, the Middle East or in many of the developing nations worldwide, Mangrum says, the Women's Leadership Kit - even without the earrings - could be perfect for her.

"It's different from just writing a check and saying, 'Well, this donation was made in your name,' because it gives a lot of information about the specific Mercy Corps programs and the people who are affected by these programs."

Among the other Mercy Kits you can buy - not just on Mother's Day - are ones that, Mangrum says, can give beekeeping start-up gear to a family in Latin America, or emergency supplies to people displaced by wars or earthquakes.

"It's really up to you what you want the gift to represent - Mercy Corps provides services all over the world. The gifts are at different price points, too, making them very affordable and a really smart idea. They start at $25."

It's all tax-deductible, she adds, and if you're going for the Women's Leadership Kit, the gift card and earrings will get to Mom before Sunday.
