“Hold the Line” Message Delivered to Legislators

May 18, 2010

RALEIGH, N.C. - Star power will be hitting the North Carolina General Assembly today to kick off the "hold the line" campaign, championing investments in early childhood education. Former Governor Jim Hunt, who is one of the celebrities delivering the message, created the nation's first statewide early childhood system called Smart Start, and as budget cuts are eyed, he wants young kids shielded.

"Our children are our future. We need them to be well-educated, become the best they can be. That's the way North Carolina will go forward, have more good jobs, and a great future."

Hunt says science has shown that the earliest years are a window of learning opportunity where positive experiences can determine a child's success later in life.

American Idol finalist Anoop Desai from Chapel Hill is another celebrity speaking up for the state's youngest today.

"What I'm always passionate about is giving children the opportunity to be successful."

The budget deficit is approaching one billion dollars, and legislators are looking at almost every state spending line item to make up the difference.
