Smile! Natrona County High School Reunion Photo Today

May 18, 2010

CASPER, Wyo. - Virginia Moriarty, who is 96, has a date with the camera today in Casper. She's answering the call for all alumni of Natrona County High School to show up at noon for a group photo to mark National Preservation Month. Her first memories of the now-historic building were before she even attended high school.

"I was thrilled to death to know that there was a swimming pool going to be in that high school and I could learn to swim."

Moriarty graduated in 1933. Several NCHS graduates now in their 80s and 90s will be there, along with younger generations.

The building is on the National Register of Historic Places, but there has been talk in recent years of building a new high school, and maybe tearing the old one down. Moriarty says that would be a shame.

"I think that this building is the best-looking building we have in the city, and I would be horrified if they demolished it."

Today's group photo will be sent to the State Historic Preservation Office and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
