Iowans With Disabilities Have a Stake in Upcoming Primary

DES MOINES, Iowa - In just over a week Iowans vote in the state's primary election, and the stakes are high. Republicans will select a challenger to Governor Chet Culver and Democrats will pick a candidate to take on veteran Senator Charles Grassley.

Nearly 57 percent of people with disabilities voted in the general election in 2008, but that is almost six percent lower than in the general population. The turnout for primary elections is even lower, but Rik Shannon with ID Action, a non-partisan group trying to increase voter participation, is trying to change that for the June 8 primary.

"One of the things that the ID Action Project is pursuing to generate voter interest is to do some surveying of gubernatorial candidates about their views on key disability policy issues. We received responses from about 50 percent of the candidates for the governor's office; we have posted them on the website."

Shannon says the Help Americans Vote Act made a tremendous difference in turnout since it passed.

"We've received very positive comments from voters with disabilities in Iowa, especially about the access of polling places, the physical access, but we continue to hear from people that one of the other barriers to their participation is the absence of good information about candidates."

Shannon says for this primary they are targeting people by phone, mail and grassroots efforts.
