Marking a Milestone: Ohio Leads the Nation in Home Weatherizations

June 8, 2010

NEWARK, Ohio - The Buckeye State is marking a major milestone as it progresses towards a clean energy economy: More than 10,000 houses in Ohio have been weatherized with the help of stimulus funds from the Home Weatherization Program. State and local leaders, including Congressman Zack Space, were on hand in Newark Monday to tour a recently retrofitted home.

Space says the program goes beyond what is happening in the homes.

"It's the kind of thing that will serve as a spark to ignite this new energy sector economy that eventually will put millions of Americans to work, will make this a more secure country, and in time with driving the technology will actually reduce the cost of power."

Meanwhile, nearly $1 million has just been awarded to the Corporation for Ohio Appalachian Development in southeast Ohio. That money will be used to train new workers to fill emerging weatherization jobs using stimulus funding.

The Director of the Ohio Department of Development, Lisa Patt-McDaniel, says Ohio has been nationally recognized by the Department of Energy and by Congress for leading the country in home weatherization.

"We are helping more Ohio families have their homes weatherized and get a better quality of life and additional money in their own pockets, as opposed to paying it out in energy bills."

Nationwide, the Home Weatherization Program helped 125,000 low-income families make their homes more comfortable and energy-efficient.
