Boulder-White Clouds Plan Before Congress Today

BOISE, Idaho - Central Idaho's Boulder-White Cloud Mountains are getting congressional attention today (Wednesday) at a Senate subcommittee hearing. Senators will take a look at the Central Idaho Development and Recreation Act (SB 3294), which would designate more than 300,000 acres in the region as wilderness.

Idaho Conservation League Executive Director Rick Johnson has been invited to testify. He says he'll explain how it took a lot of compromise and collaboration to make sure the diverse, daily concerns of people who live in the area were addressed - concerns that include ranching, snowmobiling, hiking, hunting and wildlife habitat preservation.

"First, you have to work on the Idaho stage and bring all the different interest groups together, but then it ultimately, has to go the Washington, D.C., arena. So, the hearing is a big step."

The bill has been many years in the making. Johnson says it now has the support of Idaho's congressional delegation, because it has been modified to address concerns. One of the biggest had been a land transfer in a National Recreation Area (NRA).

"It used to have certain conveyances of public land that were in the Sawtooth NRA, and those have been removed. And that, I think, removes the biggest point of contention."

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on Public Lands and Forests holds the hearing. Opposing testimony is expected from off-road recreation interests, although Johnson points out the bill includes a guarantee that high elevation snowmobile access will continue in several locations, and the prized Germania Creek motorized trail will stay open.
