LAS CRUCES, N. M. - A former U.S. Army Major General who helped develop and design the training for Iraqi security forces is in New Mexico today to share a message about national security with an audience in Las Cruces. Retired Major General Paul Eaton says, when he looks into the future, the threats that worry him most are our dependence on foreign oil and the potential for new conflicts spurred by climate change.

"As our glaciers melt and as our water sources become problematic, countries are going to do what they have to do in order to sustain their populations. And if that means going to war over water, that is very much a possibility."

According to Eaton, water scarcity could be a particularly dangerous issue in parts of South America, and between India and Pakistan. He says he wanted to visit New Mexico to speak with leaders here about the state's efforts to build a clean energy economy.

"New Mexico has got a lot going for it, just naturally. The opportunity to capture energy from the sun, the wind farms that we can optimize - I think New Mexico really is in a position to be a vanguard state."

In addition to wind and solar energy, Congressman Harry Teague and New Mexico State University have also released a "plan for biofuels leadership" to boost the renewable fuels industry in the state. Southern New Mexico is already home to new facilities working to make biofuels from algae.

The U.S. military is also finding new ways to use less oil to fuel its fleets and operations abroad, says Eaton. One example is a Navy project to design a new hybrid ship that uses far less fuel at sea. Eaton's presentation is at 7:00 p.m. at Good Samaritan Village Auditorium, Las Cruces.
