Attention MT Backyard Campers: Pitch the Tent this Weekend
Wednesday, June 23, 2010
MISSOULA, Mont. - This weekend, Montana families are being encouraged to set aside some time to take a walk at sunset and sleep out under the stars for the "Great American Backyard Campout." The annual event is designed to get kids interested in nature – and away from electronics.
Ian Foster, chair of the group Missoula Children and Nature, says they recognize not all kids have a backyard or a tent, so they've put together a family campout on Saturday night at Travelers' Rest State Park, Missoula.
"Give them the opportunity to come out and do this with all meals provided, as well as gear. So, to teach them skills along the way such as they can go out and replicate this experience on their own."
Foster notes the average Montana kid spends more than 45 hours a week in front of a TV, computer or video game; he says that's a shame when there are so many outdoor resources available. He sees the campout as a way to encourage kids to "think outside" for entertainment.
"We are certainly lucky to have all the natural spaces we do here in Montana, and want to get our youth in contact with those."
The Great American Backyard Campout is sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation, which promotes getting kids involved in the outdoors as a pathway to better school grades, greater creativity and improved physical fitness.
Families must register for the Missoula campout and the deadline is today (Wednesday). Contact Foster by phone (406-721-7275) or register online at www.missoulachildrenandnature.org. Overall information about the Great American Backyard Campout is available at www.backyardcampout.org.
