Camping Weekend: In ND Backyards

June 24, 2010

FARGO, N.D. - North Dakota's children are being urged to head outside this weekend as the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) holds its annual Great American Backyard Campout. The effort to encourage children to leave the video games, television and computers behind is based on statistics that show a large number of young people spend about 45 hours a week in front of those screens. NWF hopes to encourage families to head outdoors - even if it's in the backyard.

Karoline Hurd, senior manager of special events for NWF, says her organization is sponsoring a family camping event in Grand Forks Saturday for families without backyards or camping gear.

"Just being in nature - something as simple as lying on the grass and looking up at the stars and stargazing at night. These are things that kids have not been able to do when they're indoors."

Camping can be an inexpensive trip at a local state park or even in your own yard.

"These days, with the economy being the way it is, it's a perfect way for families to enjoy the outdoors without having to spend a lot of money. They can go into their backyard, or local community campground, or park, and enjoy the great outdoors."

Campers who register at www.BackyardCampout.org can get information on where to go and what to do, along with recipes for camping food, wildlife guides and other nature activities.
