Free Legal Aid For Kentucky Veterans

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Legal help for thousands of Kentucky veterans will literally roll into town early next month. On July 9 and 10, Project SALUTE, an RV-turned-mobile-law-office, will make a stop at the Legal Aid Society offices in Louisville.

Marc Theriault heads up the Society's law and technology projects. He says veterans can get free advice about whether their benefits correctly reflect their time in the service.

"The backlog for benefit appeals claims is over a million long, and there are thousands upon thousands of veterans who aren't getting the money they really deserve."

The project also will help veterans sort out a plan of action to address the complex injuries they're bringing home with them from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Theriault says.

"Brain injuries that have been caused by explosions, just the nature of the war over there, there's a lot of post traumatic stress disorder coming back - it's something that, when filling out a claim, or appealing claims, they really do need legal assistance for."

A partnership between the Legal Aid Society and Project SALUTE seemed like a natural fit considering the need, Theriault adds. More than 70,000 veterans live in Jefferson County alone.

"We reached out to them and they've been terrific to work with. I think it's a relationship that will move forward together."

The Legal Aid Society was able to arrange for the Project SALUTE stopover through a federal grant it received. The rolling clinic will be open and ready to do business Friday, July 9, and Saturday, July 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in front of 416 West Muhammad Ali Blvd.
