NEW YORK, N.Y. - Church, union and immigration groups will be gathering on Long Island this week to oppose Arizona's controversial 1070 immigration law and to craft policy suggestions for comprehensive immigration reform and other worker issues.

Charlene Obernauer, director of Long Island Jobs for Justice, says if the Obama administration had tackled the immigration issue earlier, then state's like Arizona might not be filling the void with controversial laws of their own. Obernauer was relieved to hear Obama renew his call for comprehensive reform, and she hopes the administration follows through with its pledge to challenge the Arizona law in court.

"We see this as a hate-bill, and we see it as something that is going to cause a lot more discrimination and is going to cause a lot more hatred against Latinos."

Arizona's 1070 law is to take effect at the end of the month. Supporters say it's needed to secure the border, while Obernauer counters it is already having a racially divisive ripple effect.

"The threatening of Ethnic Studies classes being banned; there was also a mural in Arizona that one of the Public Schools wanted to repaint because there were people of color in the painting."

Obernauer says the Jobs with Justice Delegate Assembly will also take up New York issues, including a bill pending in the State Senate that calls for new protections for farm workers.

"Just like Arizona tried to fix immigration in a bad way with their bill, we're trying to fix a lot of worker exploitation in a good way, with the Farm Worker Fair Labor Practices Act."

Obernauer says it's important for New Yorkers to take a stand against the Arizona law because, as long as it's on the books, other states will create similar laws. Church, union and immigration groups will meet in a Delegate Assembly on Thursday to formalize their response to the law and to discuss other worker issues.

The Delegate Assembly takes place Thursday, July 8th, 9:00 a.m. at 100 Duffy Avenue in Hicksville.
