Shooting Highlights "Community" Domestic Abuse Problem

July 14, 2010

ALBUQUERQUE - As more information is released on Monday's tragic Emcore shooting, most reports indicate it may have been an incident of domestic abuse spilling over into a workplace. Pam Wiseman, executive director of the New Mexico Coalition Against Domestic Violence, says it's a reminder that domestic violence is a problem that affects entire communities.

"It affects lots of people, not just victims, but victims' families, their neighbors, their friends, their coworkers. Domestic violence affects the community in ways that, many times, we don't see. This is an example of an escalation of domestic violence that is very visible and tragic."

Wiseman says if anyone you know is scared at home or a potential victim of domestic violence, it's important to listen, be supportive and help them get the help they need.

"When someone says to you, 'I'm afraid my partner might kill me,' that is the strongest predictor of any that we know of, that that kind of crime could happen."

She also notes that this week's news could affect people who have experienced domestic violence or are living through it now. She says it is important that they know there are programs across the state that can help. There is also a 24-hour, toll-free domestic violence hotline, 1-800-799-SAFE.
