FORT MITCHELL, Ken. - Monday marks the 20th anniversary of the landmark legislation outlawing discrimination against people with disabilities - the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). To celebrate the milestone, some Kentucky crusaders have been on an 11-city "freedom rally' tour to demonstrate the importance of the law. In the Bluegrass State, an estimated 874,000 people are living with disabilities; more than 20 percent of the state's population.

John Stephenson, a grassroots organizer with Independence Place and the ADA Action Network of Kentucky, lives with a disability and is the caregiver of an ailing spouse. He says the cross-state rallies celebrate the gains made possible by the ADA.

"The main goal is to grab the attention of the public and let them realize the importance of inclusion. That these people have challenges, but the challenge is that all Americans can do something productive."

Stephenson says that, both locally and nationally, there's a rapid growth in the number of people with disabilities because of the aging population and injured veterans returning home from combat.

"One day you can be in perfect health, and the very next minute you can be in an automobile accident and be disabled. This isn't just all people who were born with disabilities; we have a tremendous amount of people who become disabled by accidents."

The ADA ensures equal opportunity for people with disabilities in employment, government services, public accommodations and transportation. A rally celebrating the anniversary of the ADA will be held in the State Capitol Rotunda in Frankfort on Monday.
