PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Philadelphia is the next stop on the national "America's Great Outdoors" initiative. This Obama administration project gathers input and lets people swap ideas locally about which natural resources are important to their state, and what can be done to help connect people to nature.

Matt Rice, associate director of Southeast Conservation with American Rivers, will chime in about waterways, which he points out carry value on several levels.

"They're the original trails. They connect urban areas and rural areas to special, treasured places. They provide clean drinking water and a whole host of other services."

Advocates have a number of recommendations for improving Pennsylvania waterways, such as setting up buffer zones around rivers and streams to keep waterways healthy when development occurs nearby. They also say legislation is needed to protect water quality from natural gas drilling and want laws written to manage stormwater runoff.

Rice says "blue trails" or "water trails" already established along the Schuylkill and Susquehanna rivers are examples of opportunities that residents and visitors have to make a connection to nature, through boating and fishing.

"These are really incredible examples of great blue trails that are reconnecting people to the outdoors; they're connecting people to special places and connecting communities to special places. They're also building broad support for river protection and river restoration."

Rice adds that Pennsylvania waterways have another role that's often forgotten: They're economic drivers.

"Typically, the real estate on and around rivers is some of the most expensive in the area. A healthy river makes that community an attractive place to invest in."

In Philadelphia, the "America's Great Outdoors" listening session is scheduled from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at WHYY, Independence Mall West, 150 N. 6th St.
