New Website Critical for North Dakota Dieters

BISMARCK, N.D. - These days many North Dakotans have questions about nutrition, like what does trans-fat mean? How much sodium is required daily? Every food item on the grocery store shelf has a nutrition label, but making sense of the information on that label isn't always so simple.

However, the American Heart Association has a new online nutrition center at www.heart.org/NutritionCenter to help. Association registered dietitian Joan Enderle says the nutrition center is set up in categories that individuals can click on and get more information.

"One of the sections is healthy diet goals. As a dietitian, a lot of times people will say to me, 'How much sodium am I supposed to have a day? or how much fat?' So there is actually a section on the diet goal."

Enderle says that nowadays all the various terms on food labels can be confusing, with some meaning the same thing, and others completely foreign to most consumers.

"The nutrition center has a dictionary of nutrition where you can look up specific terms, so if you hear the term like 'trans-fat' you can actually look up that term and it will explain to you what that means."

She says there are also tips for general healthy nutrition and help with preventing major problems like heart disease.

The website is www.heart.org
