Fargo, ND - Tomorrow is the American Heart Association's Heart Walk in Trollwood Park in Moorhead. 60 walking teams are expected, representing 60 companies, to raise money and to promote walking as a way to promote heart health. Comments from Mick Gibbs, vice president of heart surgery for the Sanford Medical Center.

Health fads come and go, but researchers for the American Heart Association have found that walking is the best way for people to obtain good heart health. Mick Gibbs, vice president of heart surgery at Sanford Medical Center and co-chair of an upcoming "Heart Walk," says there is a reason why walking outdoes other exercises.

"The reason why walking and starting walking is important is it's easy, it's safe, it's free and it has the lowest drop-out rate of exercise, ironically."

Saturday is the American Heart Association's Heart Walk in Moorhead where dozens of teams of walkers will be raising funds and awareness about the benefits of a daily brisk walk. Gibbs says there are other benefits to walking than just better heart health.

"There is a body mass index impact so we lose weight. Our weight loss improves not just our heart health, but our total physical fitness."

He says the American Heart Association also offers a website that features a list of walking trails, a fitness and nutrition tracker, and a social networking tool to find other walkers.
