New Mexico's Wild Weekend During Wilderness Month

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - This month has been declared National Wilderness Month by the president, and there's a Wilderness Festival in New Mexico this weekend to celebrate. It's being thrown by supporters of a bill that was introduced in Congress a year ago to protect the Organ Mountains and other wild areas near Las Cruces.

Nathan Small, conservation coordinator with the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance, says a growing coalition has come to support the new protections for the Organ, Potrillo and Robledo Mountains as well as parts of Broad Canyon.

"So, you have the Hispano Chamber of Commerce, the Green Chamber of Commerce, sportsmen organizations, you have local conservation groups, and most importantly, so many different citizens."

Small believes protecting the Organ Mountains is a smart investment in a down economy.

"Folks down here call it the 'goose that laid the golden egg' when they talk about the Organ Mountains, and giving the gold standard protection to that, really helps draw interest and attention and dollars to this area."

Some small groups have opposed the bill saying it could threaten national security along the border, but after compromises were made this summer, several security experts and a former deputy chief of the border patrol endorsed the plan.

The Wilderness Festival will feature free food, music and children's activities on Sunday, Sept. 19 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Young Park in Las Cruces.
