Praying For Compassion During 40 Days Of Prayer

September 22, 2010

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The 40 Days of Prayer campaign begins today (Wednesday) in Missouri and across the country, an occasion that often involves prayer and vigils outside clinics, calling for an end to abortion. However, supporters of reproductive rights say prayer has always taken place inside clinics, as well.

Reverend Rebecca Turner, executive director of Faith Aloud says for the first time, her organization is working with 100 clinics nationwide and in Missouri for the next 40 days, to give women spiritual support as they face life's complex decisions.

"The people who stand on the sidewalks outside of clinics very often are those who, we think, have really hijacked Christianity and tried to proclaim that you can't be pro-choice and Christian. And yet, we know that there have always been Christians who are pro-choice."

Turner says Faith Aloud has partnered with clinics in 24 states.

"And they're using Faith Aloud materials to help women really define for themselves what their own best decisions are, and to keep their own sense of spirituality intact as they face those decisions."

Anti-abortion demonstrations are expected to be some of the largest ever. The 40 Days of Prayer campaign runs through October, leading up to the November elections.
