Kids Take the Stage at OR Immigration Reform Rally

SALEM, Ore. - This weekend's march and rally for immigration reform at the State Capitol may be a first in Oregon – all the speakers will be kids. They youngsters will share their experiences of how anti-immigrant laws and policies are playing out in their everyday lives – from moms and dads unable to get drivers licenses, to relatives being detained or deported, to teens being unable to apply for college aid.

Organizer Aeryca Steinbauer with CAUSA, Oregon's immigrant rights coalition, says the latest suggestion – to change the U.S. Constitution so that people born in America are not automatically citizens – has prompted a new push for comprehensive immigration reform.

"Different anti-immigrant proposals that are always in the news certainly create a climate of fear in the community. And one of those that especially speaks to the heart of the children's march is the attempt to take away kids' right to citizenship if they're born here."

Steinbauer says "get out the vote" efforts for Latinos in the November election are lagging a bit in Oregon because of the lack of progress on immigration reform.

"We have been hearing a lot of disinterest and lack of motivation among voters who wish that more things have happened. But our message is that it's really important to keep engaged, keep making your voice be heard – that the struggle isn't over; that we're in it for the long haul."

She says the new immigration reform legislation introduced last week in the U.S. Senate is tough, but fair and practical. Opponents have called it a "mass amnesty bill" that would allow most undocumented immigrants to remain in the United States.

The children's march and rally takes place on Saturday, Oct. 9 at noon, on the front steps of the State Capitol, 900 Court St. NE, Salem.
