What Are John Raese’s Attitudes About Race?

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Allegations have cropped up this week that West Virginia Senate candidate John Raese is a member of Everglades Club in Florida. The Associated Press says that country club excludes African Americans and Jews. Raese has also been recorded at public events mocking the names of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Energy Secretary Steven Chu. In a recording from September, he calls the Nobel Prize winning physicist "Dr. Chow Mein":

"He just brought to Charleston yesterday, Dr. Cho, or Dr. Chow, or Dr. Chow Mein, I don't know what his name is."

The Reverend James Patterson is the executive director of the Partnership of African American Churches. He says this kind of question should no longer be coming up in 2010, but he says he's not surprised, given what he sees as a racist undertone in the Republican campaign to connect Gov. Joe Manchin to President Obama.

"That whole race thing is running under the surface. That seems to be what the commercials are all about, that a vote for Joe Manchin is a vote for a man of color."

U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd, who held the seat Raese is running for, was often criticized for once being a member of the Ku Klux Klan, but Patterson says when Byrd did that, it was a different country.

"The things Sen. Byrd did, he did early on in his career. And he did within the context of where the country was at that particular time."

The Raese campaign did not return several calls and e-mails requesting comment on his membership in the Florida club. The Democratic Party also declined to comment.
